Krótki opis

The aim of the project is to search for Dark Matter (DM) candidates in the Positronium system. Positronium is a bound state of an electron and a positron, suitable for testing the predictions of quantum electrodynamics (QED). Present positronium experiments search for invisible decays of its triplet state, the ortho-Positronium (o-Ps), which mainly decays to three photons. These invisible decays are sensitive to new physics scenarios, e.g. mirror matter. Mirror matter would interact with normal particles mainly through gravity, thus becoming possible DM candidates.

The work scope of this master comprises the simulation, using the dedicated Monte Carlo packages, of a tagger system made of scintillator fibers and Silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) readout, capable of detecting ejected positrons by a 22Na source located inside a vacuum chamber. The detection system will be included in the J-PET Monte Carlo software to study the feasibility and efficiency of such a detector.

The JPET is a novel, total-body Positron-Electron Tomograph (PET) scanner, a large and high precise medical imaging tool, based on the plastic scintillators. In the case of the JPET at the Jagiellonian University, a novel PET scanner technology has been developed.
